[K-Culture] "Hon-bab" (Eating Alone): The Rising Solo Dining Trend in Korea 🍱
Hi everyone! Have you ever felt awkward about eating alone in a restaurant? In the past, Korea had a very strong "eating together" culture, where ordering for one was almost impossible.
But things have changed! Today, we’re talking about "Hon-bab" (혼밥), the trendy term for solo dining that is reshaping the Korean food scene.
1. What does "Hon-bab" mean?
It’s a combination of two words:
Hon (혼): From "Hon-ja" (혼자), meaning "Alone."
Bab (밥): Meaning "Rice" or "Meal."
So, "Hon-bab" simply means having a meal by yourself. Along with this, you might also hear "Hon-sul" (drinking alone) or "Hon-young" (watching movies alone).
2. Why is "Hon-bab" so popular now?
Previously, eating alone was seen as a bit lonely. However, the younger generation (MZ generation) values personal time and convenience. With the rise of single-person households, people now embrace "Hon-bab" as a way to focus on their own taste and speed without having to make small talk.
3. Best Places for "Hon-bab" in Korea
If you’re traveling solo in Korea, don't worry! Look for these spots:
Convenience Stores (Pyeoni-jeom): High-quality lunch boxes (Dosirak) and designated seating areas.
Noodle Shops (Guksu-jip): Most ramen or guksu shops have counter seats perfect for solo diners.
Unmanned Restaurants: Many new spots use kiosks for ordering, making it even easier for those who want a quiet meal.
Fast Food & Rice Bowl (Deop-bap) Shops: These are generally the most "Hon-bab friendly" environments.
4. Tips for Solo Travelers
Avoid Peak Hours: Between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM, restaurants are very busy. Going a bit earlier or later will give you a more relaxed experience.
Check the Menu: Some BBQ (Samgyeopsal) or Stew (Jeongol) places still require a minimum 2-person order. Look for places that offer "1-person portions" (1-in-bun).
💡 Heartbeat Vocabulary
Hon-ja (혼자): Alone
Sik-sa (식사): Meal
Mat-iss-ge deu-se-yo (맛있게 드세요): Enjoy your meal!
Gwen-chan-a-yo (괜찮아요): It's okay / I'm fine (Good for when staff asks if you're okay with a small table).
