How to Order at a Korean Cafe like a Local

How to Order at a Korean Cafe like a Local ☕

If you visit Korea, you’ll quickly notice one thing: there is a cafe on every corner! Koreans love coffee, and visiting a "pretty cafe" is a huge part of the culture.

To help you feel more confident when you walk into a cafe in Seoul (or anywhere in Korea!), here are the essential phrases and tips you need to know.

1. The Magic Word: "Juseyo" (주세요)

If you only learn one word for your trip, make it this one. "Juseyo" means "Please give me..." It’s the most polite and common way to order anything.

  • Structure: [Item] + Juseyo

  • Example: "Americano juseyo." (An Americano, please.)

2. Order like a Native: "A-A" (아아)

Koreans love shortcuts! You might hear people ordering an "A-A" (pronounced like 'Ah-Ah').

  • A-A (아아): Short for Iced (A)mericano (A)mericano. * Even in freezing winter, many Koreans drink "Ice-A-A" (there’s even a saying: "Eol-Juk-A" – which means "Freeze to death, but still Iced Americano").

3. Hot or Ice? (Ttatteut-han vs. Cha-ga-un)

The staff will often ask if you want your drink hot or cold.

  • Hot: Ttatteut-han (따뜻한)

  • Iced: Si-won-han (시원한) or Ice (아이스)

  • Pro Tip: Just saying "Ice [Drink Name]" works perfectly everywhere!

4. Stay or Go?

In Korea, disposable cups are usually not allowed if you are drinking inside the cafe. The staff will ask:

  • "Meok-go gal-ge-yo" (먹고 갈게요): I’ll drink it here.

  • "Ga-jyeo-gal-ge-yo" (가져갈게요): Take-out, please.
